OFFICIAL GO AHEAD FOR NZ SILVER FERN RALLY
by NZ Silver Fern Rally

The Marathon Rally Car Club Inc is pleased to officially announce today that the NZ Silver Fern Rally will be held from October 7th to 14th 2006.

NZ Silver Fern Rally Chairman Hamilton’s Gary Smith said “we are pleased to have the date finalised. Now we can get on with the really serious work of plotting of the route, and we can work towards a January release of the route details and the event regulations”.

The NZ Silver Fern Rally fits well in the local motorsport calendar, being at the end of the gravel rallying season, (only Propecia Rally NZ in November is later), and before the start of the summer circuit racing series.

The early October date may well also benefit other events like the all tarmac Dunlop Targa Rally, with several overseas drivers saying it is possible to stay on in New Zealand and compete in both events.

The October date will allow also the inclusion of a number of the high country roads which will by then have been re-opened after their winter closures. Weather conditions should be stable, and the Forests not too dry.

The event is expected to attract up to 100 entrants from New Zealand and around the world. Smith commented that “many local rally enthusiasts have been waiting for some time now for an event of this magnitude to come along. It is now our job to make it happen for them”

New Zealand’s first week long marathon type car rally, since the days of the Heatway and Motogard Rallies back in the 1970’s and 80’s, looks likely to start and finish in Blenheim at the top of New Zealand’s Scenic South Island, and will utilise between 1000 and 1500kms of high speed special stages traveling as far south as Queenstown, including overnight stops in Christchurch, Dunedin, Nelson and Greymouth.

Pre event preparations will begin on Saturday 7th October and the NZ Silver Fern Rally proper will begin with two prologue special stages on Sunday 8th October, then six full days of rallying before finishing on Saturday October 14th 2006.

The NZ Silver Fern Rally organisers would like to acknowledge the co-operation of Motorsport NZ, the Rally Commission and Rally Co, as well as the individual Car Clubs who have all played a part in the recent re-organisation of the 2006 NZ rallying calendar.

Further information and regular updates will be available on the Marathon Rally Car Club’s, NZ Silver Fern Rally website - www.silverfernrally.co.nz
