HOLDEN WINS DYNATRON FORMULA CHALLENGE SERIES
by Fast Company/Ross MacKay

Young Hamilton driver Barry Holden is the winner of the Dynatron Formula Challenge 2004 Winter Series.

Holden, 18, wrapped up the televised three-round, eight race series at the Taupo Motor Racing Circuit today, setting the fastest time in qualifying, recovering from a mid race spin to finish sixth in the first race, then guaranteeing himself the Dynatron title with third place in the final.

The win is a valuable one for Holden - as well as the Dynatron Formula Challenge 2004 series trophy he wins an all-expenses paid drive in a single seater support class at next year's Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix courtesy the series' official tyre supplier Silverstone Tyres.

Pukekohe's Jody Vincent ended up second in the 2004 series points standings after setting the third fastest qualifying time and finishing second in both 14 lap races behind Hamiltonian Simon Richards.

Richards was the dominant force on the day, successfully taking the battle to the two title prospects and winning both races as he liked, the first from Vincent, Nigel Bunny, David Westall and Dale Williams, the second from Vincent, Holden, Mike Rohloff and Williams.

In doing so he leap frogged Auckland driver Josh Franklin in the overall series points standings to claim third place.

Franklin ended up fourth after a day which started well, but went downhill from there.

The talented former Kart champion and now rising Speedway Midget star set the second fastest lap time in the morning qualifying session but dropped back down through the field in the first race after an early incident which tore his car's front wing from its mounts.

He had a better start in the second race, running as high as second behind eventual winner Richards, but was slowed and eventually stopped by gear selection problems.

Fifth overall in the Dynatron series points standings was Taupo's Mike Rohloff, sixth Seoul-based Aucklander David Westall.
