Family, friends and members of the motorsport and kart fraternities gathered at St Mark's Anglican Church in Auckland's Remuera today to farewell Michael McHugh, the young racing driver killed in a freak Formula Ford accident at Pukekohe on Sunday.
Over 300 people crowded into the historic chapel on Remuera Rd with another 200 listening to the service via loud speaker in the grounds outside the church.
The service was presided over by the Reverend Bruce Keeley with a number of eulogies delivered, including a moving one by Michael's father Steve McHugh, and another by racing identity Ken Smith.
In a tribute to the young driver whom he mentored, Smith, the elder statesman of New Zealand motor racing said;
"This bright and always cheerful young man has been an inspiration to us all. Let us celebrate this inspiration and the loving impact this champion has had upon us and show him how proud we are to have enjoyed his humour and personal character."
Kart and Formula Ford drivers formed a guard of honour as pall-bearers Steve McHugh, Ken Smith, Glyn Felton, Bill and Mark Russ and Bruce Rattray carried Michael's coffin from the church.
They then lined the drive behind racing driver Owen Evans and Mt Wellington Kart Club President Dave Young as the hearse left the church.
After the funeral service the Mount Wellington Kart Club hosted a wake at their Kart track at Tainui Rd Mt Wellington.
