The reigning Toyota Racing Series champion, Andy Knight of Christchurch, will return to the class this weekend at the Taupo Motorsport Park.
The event is Round 4 of the 2008/2009 series and also the third and final round of the three round International Series that has been held in conjunction with the January rounds of the championship. It is also a support category for the New Zealand race of the A1GP World Cup Of Motorsport at the circuit this weekend.
Knight, the defending champion from last year's series and the current New Zealand Grand Prix Champion, raced in the Toyota Racing Series for four year's until the current season when he moved to the BNT V8s Championship. In his time in the class he never finished lower than fourth in the championship.
On Tuesday night Andy got the opportunity to replace Australian driver Nathan Antunes who was unavailable to drive for Trevor Sheumack's European Technique Team this weekend. While he hasn't driven a TRS car for almost twelve months Knight is keen to replicate his form of last season. "It won't be too bad going back to the category," he say's. "I know it well. I will be going out to win."
Lined up against the champion this weekend is a strong field. From the UK comes 17-year-old Will Stevens, already the subject of attention from a Formula 1 team, and 16-year-old William Buller of Northern Ireland. Both have shown speed to date as has Australian Scott Pye. The kiwi contingent is also strong with Mitch Cunningham currently leading the overall series. In addition to Knight two other new faces join the field this weekend. Former Formula Ford ace Andrew Waite will make his second TRS appearance after competing at Hamilton last year while two-time NZV8s Champion John McIntyre of Nelson is making his debut in the class.
Andy has support from Milwaukee Power Tools, one of the world's premium power tool brands, The Interislander and John Jones Steel Ltd.
The Toyota Racing Series competitors receive a 25 minute test session at 10am on Friday morning followed by their qualifying sessions at 3.05pm and 3.25pm that afternoon. The first race of the round takes place over 10 laps on Saturday afternoon at 1.20pm. Another 10 lap contest follows at 4.20pm on Saturday afternoon. The final race over 16 laps for the Denny Hulme Memorial Trophy is scheduled for 12.55pm on Sunday.
