The Stone Brothers Racing team made a solid start to this weekend's final round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series at Oran Park, with JELD-WEN Motorsport's James Courtney and SP Tools Racing's Shane van Gisbergen inside the top 15 in today's opening practice session.
Courtney was eighth fastest with a 1:10.0418 second lap while team-mate van Gisbergen put in a lap time of 1:10.5435 seconds to be 15th fastest in the 29-car field.
The JELD-WEN Motorsport Falcon performed smoothly throughout the two-and-a-quarter hour practice session, Courtney finding the number-four BF Falcon a little loose but otherwise very good.
Van Gisbergen's SP Tools Racing Falcon was a little more of a handful, a poor set of old tyres making progress on car set up difficult. Things improved for the 19-year-old with a set of green tyres late in practice and the young Kiwi is confident of improvement in qualifying tomorrow.
Van Gisbergen and Courtney will be back on track for qualifying at 10:00am tomorrow.
In the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series, SBR's Jonathon Webb qualified 11th for tomorrow's 22-lap race.
Shane van Gisbergen, #9, SP Tools Racing "We had a real battle on our hands in practice.
"It turns out we had a dud set of tyres on early and we were trying to make the car better and getting nowhere.
"Once we put our net set on things were a lot better but the time that we lost on the first set really hurt us.
"Aside from that, I'm really enjoying the track; its one of my favourites. It flows well and there is always a corner coming up and you can drive hard and get into it."
James Courtney, #4, JELD-WEN Motorsport "The JELD-WEN Falcon was pretty good this afternoon.
"It was a little loose and didn't feel that fast but we are not far off the pace.
"We struggled with grip in the rear then lost some balance with green tyres but overall we are not in crazy trouble.
"We know where we need to work to find the improvements and we will be in the mix tomorrow."
