DAY FOR THE DEFENDING CHAMPIONS AT BLENHEIM
by Fast Company/Ross MacKay

It was a day for the defending champions on the first day of competition at KartSport New Zealand's annual National Sprint Kart championship meeting at Blenheim's Herkt Kart Raceway on Saturday.

Both Simon Hunter and Mathew Hamilton successfully defended their 2007 titles, Hunter in the Senior 100cc Yamaha Heavy class, Hamilton in 125cc Rotax Max Light.

Current Island champions Karl Wilson (Nth Is. Senior 100cc Yamaha Light), Chris Cox (Sth Is. Junior 100cc Yamaha) and Maddison Wise (Nth Is. Cadet) also claimed New Zealand titles in their classes.

As well, Hunter and Wise enjoyed the rare distinction of qualifying quickest and winning every race they started.

Hunter was briefly headed in the Senior 100cc Yamaha Heavy final by Tokoroa driver Bradley Tyrrell but was soon back in front and edged away to win the race and second consecutive New Zealand title from Aucklander Stuart Marshall.

Wise was in a class of his own however with only Joel Herbert (Auckland) offering any serious competition.

It was a lot closer in Senior 100cc Yamaha Light with Karl Wilson really only coming to the fore in the Pre-Final. Invercargill driver Jamie Conroy qualified quickest on Friday and West Coast driver Scott Downes won both heats and the Pre-Final before being forced out of the lead in the Final by a mechanical issue.

Eventual runner-up Jesse Craig (Christchurch) qualified quickest in Junior 100cc Yamaha, but after that fellow Cantabrian Chris Cox had the upper hand, winning the heats, Pre-Final and incident-marred Final which had to be stopped and restarted three times because of incidents before it could be completed.

Craig was second, Aucklander Tim Vickers third.

Matthew Hamilton had an even harder row to hoe in 125cc Rotax Max Light, older sister Fiona Hamilton - a fellow former South Island and New Zealand champion - the pace-setter in qualifying, both heats and the Pre-Final.

Her brother was never far behind but had to wait until mid-way through the Final to find a gap and finally take the lead.

Between them the Hamilton siblings have now won six New Zealand and two South Island 125cc Rotax Max Light class titles, with Matthew claiming the inaugural New Zealand one in 2001 then coming back to win it again in 2004, 2007 and now 2008, and Fiona winning it in 2002 and again in 2003.

Competition at the annual National Sprint Kart Championship meeting at the Blenheim Kart Club's Herkt Kart Raceway continues today with a further six class titles contested.
