HYDE TAKES TITLE WITH PERFECT PHILLIP ISLAND SCORE
by Fast Company/Ross MacKay

Chris Hyde (McRae GM1) has claimed the 2007/08 MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series title after another dominant performance at the final round at Australia's Phillip Island circuit over the weekend.

The Christchurch driver was literally in a class of his own at the series final meeting, qualifying over two seconds quicker than top Australian driver Andrew Robson (Lola T332) then running away with all three races.

On the way he set a new category lap record of 1.30.1205, quicker even than the pole time (1.30.7310) he set in qualifying.

Andrew Robson, driving a car once owned by New Zealand great Ken Smith, was second on each occasion with Christchurch's Tony Richards (Lola T332) third in the first and second races and Australian driver G. Belgiorno-Nettis (Ferrari F1) third in the final.

With Ken Smith committed to the final round of the 2007/08 Toyota Racing Series at home in New Zealand over the weekend, the car he drove at the four New Zealand rounds, David Abbott's Lola T430, was driven at Phillip Island by recently retired V8 Supercar driver John Bowe.

Bowe, who raced an Elfin Formula 5000 car early in his career, was quickly on the pace, finishing sixth in each race and fourth overall for the round.

With Smith unable to add to his points tally, Hyde was guaranteed the 2007/08 MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series trophy with Smith second. However third place turned into a battle royal between Lola T332 drivers Tony Richards and Sefton Gibb with only two points in it at the end.

Richards laid the gauntlet down in qualifying, setting the fourth quickest time. He then went on to finish third in Saturday's race, third again in the first race on Sunday and fourth in the final.

Gibb, driving Ian Clements' 2006/07 MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series car, qualified seventh then finished seventh respectively in the first two races and eighth in the final.

Not bad for a newcomer to the fast, flowing Phillip Island circuit but this time third place in the 2007/08 MSC series went to Richards, albeit by just two points over Gibb.

Round-wise after Hyde and Robson came Richards then John Bowe, Stuart Lush (McRae GM1) and Gibb.

Series-wise Hyde led home Smith, Richards, Gibb, and Christchurch drivers Stan Redmond (Lola T332) and David Abbott (Lola T430).

An interesting addition to the record 28-strong F5000 race field at the Shannons Classic meeting at Phillip Island was the ground effects Ferrari F1 car driven by G.Belgiorno-Nettis.

The Australian-based driver qualified third and kept put finished in the top six in each race.

Also driving a Formula 1 car at the meeting was Christchurch driver Phil Mauger who owns and races the ex Denny Hulme McLaren M23 which runs with the MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival cars.
