Clipsal 500 Adelaide named as nation's best festival or event
by V8 Supercars Australia

The Clipsal 500 Adelaide V8 Supercar event has been named as Australia's best major event or festival at the Qantas Australian National Tourism Awards announced at the National Convention Centre in Canberra on Friday evening (29 February 2007).

The award, for the 2007 event, is the third time the Clipsal 500 Adelaide has been named as the best event in the country.

The Qantas Australian Tourism Awards (QATA) recognise and promote excellence in tourism. They are the pinnacle of achievement for the tourism industry in Australia. Finalists are drawn from the State and Territory Tourism Awards winners across 25 categories.

'To have won this award yet again is simply outstanding', Clipsal 500 Adelaide Chief Executive Andrew Daniels said today.

'We are by far and away Australia's largest (in terms of attendance numbers) domestic motor sport event, and we have always set out to be, and I believe have been recognised as being, more than just a motor race', Mr. Daniels added.

The 2007 Clipsal 500 Adelaide featured eight racing categories, and four major on course concerts. A major launch for the event was held at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre with other activities including a V8 Supercar Pit Stop Challenge competition, the V8 Supercar Drivers Autograph session, the Clipsal 500 Adelaide Rally from Melbourne to Adelaide, the V8 Supercar Royal Society for the Blind Luncheon, Clipsal 500 Ladies Day Luncheon, and Clipsal 500 Street Parties in Adelaide's entertainment precincts.

Innovations at the event included a "Walk of Fame" featuring legends of motor sport depicted by South Australian motoring artist John Stoneham, while spectator amenities were improved with additional catering outlets and more shade areas, while a new innovation – misting fans – were extremely popular with patrons.

The Australian Defence Force was again a major contributor to the event with spectacular flyovers and on ground displays.

Since the first V8 Supercar race was held in Adelaide in 1999, the economic benefit to South Australia has been $186.9 million (up to the 2007 event). The 2007 race alone generated $30.1 million in economic benefit to the State with 276,900 in attendance.

The race generated 68,000 bed visitor bed nights and the equivalent of around 400 full time jobs. A media audit of national and international print, television and radio coverage of the 2007 Clipsal 500 Adelaide valued the coverage achieved at $108 million.

In addition to winning three awards as the nation's best event, the Clipsal 500 Adelaide has also been inducted into both the SA Tourism Hall of Fame and the V8 Supercars Australia Hall of Fame, and has won numerous other State tourism awards.

This year's Clipsal 500 Adelaide (the 10th to be held) was conducted from 21-24 February, and again set a new national motor sport record attendance of 291,400.
