The 2007 North Island Endurance Series is set to go down to the wire at the 11th annual Dodson Autospares/Kea Trailers Pukekohe 6 Hour race on Saturday.
Heading into the popular day/night race only two points separate the Nissan Skyline Turbo of event co-sponsor Harry Dodson, Peter Wieser and Jody Vincent, and the Toyota Corolla Levin Turbo of South Islanders Peter Swaney and Craig McDermid.
Swaney and McDermid won the first four-hour round of the annual endurance series from Dodson and Wieser at Manfeild in early May but the latter pair returned the favour at the second round at Taupo a fortnight later, winning that four hour race from the Porsche 911 Turbo of father and son Mack and Ben Storey with Swaney and McDermid third.
The Storey Porsche is third overall just six points back going into this weekend's season finale with the Placemakers Huntly and Wegner Bricklaying-backed Holden Commodore NZV8 of kart-turned-car racer Shane Charlton and Ken Starnes only two points behind them in fourth.
There is then a six point gap back to Andrew Fawcet and Rick Lucas (Mitsubishi Evo 9), and Andrew Porter and John Penny (Holden Commodore NZV8) who are tied for fifth place overall.
With changeable weather conditions predicted for Saturday's final it could be anyone's race, the longer day/night format adding a new dimension to a typical long distance event.
Last year's event was held in torrential rain and all most competitors are hoping for this year is a decent day.
"It can be cold, but I know I'd prefer it if it didn't rain," said young gun Shane Charlton this morning." Last year, I think, we ran as many laps behind the safety car as we did under the green flag and I'd prefer not to do that again."
The day/night format adds its own special element to the Pukekohe race, though Charlton says that given similar track conditions the pace is usually just as hot.
"It is a bit more difficult because you're driving to your headlights, but you're definitely going just as hard if the track is dry."
Saturday's meeting has attracted 43 entries and starts at 1 pm and finishes at 7pm.
