Cunningham commutes between Silverstone and Donington with very different results...
Black Bullet Neil Cunningham escaped uninjured from a 140mph high-speed accident at Silverstone on Saturday when the Ford Shelby GT350 he was driving smashed through safety barriers when the throttle of the 6-litre car became stuck wide open.
Fresh from completing work as a stunt driver on the soon to be released new James Bond film, Cunningham, an experienced GT and two-time Le Mans 24-Hour Race competitor, knew he was in for a wild ride when he realised that the throttle of the car was stuck when he attempted to slow for Becketts corner.
The car, a racing version of the iconic US-muscle car made famous by Steve McQueen in the film 'Bullitt', screeched out of control for over 500 metres - crashing into a rival competitors Chevrolet before hitting trackside safety barriers. The car, with Cunningham sitting helpless inside, then crossed another of Silverstone's many race tracks, narrowly missing school cars undertaking training laps, before a gravel trap finally halted the Shelby.
"I knew I was in trouble as soon as I realised the throttle was stuck on," Cunningham said afterwards.
A member of the elite British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC), Cunningham continued, "The main thing in my mind was to just to try and stop the car - and avoid hitting anything hard!"
"Sadly that wasn't an option, as I collided with a Chevy, and that broke my sterring. From that point on I was a passenger, and I just didn't know where I was going to end up."
After a check over by the Silverstone medical crew, Cunningham departed Silverstone to head to Donington Park - some sixty miles up the M1 motorway from Silverstone where he had qualified a 1959 Lister Chevrolet earlier the same day. Just over an hour after his Silverstone accident, Cunningham was racing to second position in the opening round of the BRDC Historic Sportscar series!
