The Citroën Total World Rally Team crew of Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena won the Acropolis Rally of Greece today, their 41st world rally victory and fifth of the season. Second position was claimed by Petter Solberg/Phil Mills in the debut competitive outing of the all-new Subaru Impreza WRC, while Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen (BP Ford) took the final podium position.
In the FIA World Rally Championship for Drivers, maximum points for Loeb put him back in the lead, just one point ahead of Hirvonen. Chris Atkinson remains third, despite not finishing the event, and Jari-Matti Latvala holds fourth. BP Ford continues to head the Manufacturers' Championship, but Citroën has closed the gap to just two points.
Today's route covered seven stages and 110.74 kilometres and once again proved to be a day of survival. With a reasonably comfortable overnight advantage Loeb was able to control the pace and eventually finished with a 69.5 second lead over Solberg. After problems during the first and second day, Hirvonen was surprised to claim the final podium position, having ultimately climbed from eighth during a difficult day yesterday.
Estonian Urmo Aava claimed a career best, bringing his Citroën C4 home in fourth position ahead of Dani Sordo (Citroën Total) and Matthew Wilson (Stobart Ford). Henning Solberg's (Stobart Ford) hopes of a podium finish fell apart today when he slipped from third to eighth with an electrical problem. Leading retirements of the day included Chris Atkinson (Subaru) and Gigi Galli (Stobart Ford).
The eighth round of the FIA World Rally Championship takes the crews to the Rally of Turkey (12-15 June).
