TRANS EUROPE RALLY CANCELLED :-
We were sorry to hear that the team at TWM have had to cancel their 2009 Trans Europe event due to lack of entries (18). This may now benefit our event as we were aware of several competitors who had opted for that event, and now may re-consider.
SPONSORSHIP :-
Congratulations to Rally NZ (and Aus) for picking up a major sponsor in Repco.
We are currently working hard on a couple of deals for sponsorship for the event. As previously mentioned we have now confirmed the Scenic Circle Hotels Accommodation, and Thrifty Vehicle Rental sponsors and are working on finalizing things with Christchurch City. More details soon on that.
We would welcome any contacts for additional sponsors.
CHRISTCHURCH CITY :-
We have all but finalized the deal with Christchurch City to stage the Rally Show and Start in the Square in the middle of Christchurch City, during the afternoon and evening of October 15th. It will be the place to be before the event, and we can promise a spectacular show of Classic Historic and 2wd Rally cars as they ready to leave on 8 days of Marathon rallying round the South Island.
2008 NATIONAL CLASSIC CHALLENGE ( Round 2 Rally Otago ) :-
The second round of the 2008 National Classic Challenge, and the Dunlop Classic Rally was held as part of Rally Otago on May 10 and 11th. www.otagorally.co.nz
Present at the event for the first time in NZ for many years were 2 Group B Audi Quattro's. pictured above is Andrew Hawkeswood's Sport Replica.
2008 RALLY OTAGO:-
while the overall event was won by Richard and Sara Mason in their BNT Subaru, it was the ex Ex works Subaru test driver Pasi Hagstrum who finally halted the run of wins in Escorts with his first using the Brent Rawstron Rossendale Wines Porsche 911. (which we believe was sold following the event to a prospective entrant in our event).
The Dunlop Classic yet again proved popular with spectators, with many of the spectator points seeing greater crowd than in past years.
Of course some of this was attributed to the appearance of Michelle Mouton and Fabrizia Pons, together in an Audi Quattro for the first time since the 1980's. The car, Malcolm Stewarts ex Mikkola A2, was driven on demonstration laps of the street stage. Mouton didn't fare so well in the classic event driving another Rossendale car the now left hook RS1800, and was hampered by a couple of punctures. Mouton was friendly and available at the pre event rally show, which also proved popular, and during the event.
Bert Murray's RX7 cleaned out the Classic Challenge, from Rob Wylie in the 240RS.
But it was the Richard Kelsey / Rob Scott RX7 that showed much promise, running 3rd until a huge rollover on the Ramrock stage, putting both into hospital. Spectators say the car clipped the edge of the road, appeared to lose a wheel and then rolled extensively ending up in a gully. Both Richard and Rob are on their way to recovery.
FROM THE RALLY MANAGER :-
Rally Manager Carl Rabbidge now has 95% of the route finalised and is ready to begin the council applications for road closures.
The Clerk of the course (Dave McCahon) and Chief Marshal (Jim Anderson) have been appointed, as has the events scrutineer Royce Watson. Their details are in the officials section of our website.
Carl is also finalising much of the safety procedures required for running and event of this size, including St Johns first aid, and stage to HQ Radio communications.
Many of the timing crews and marshals for the stages are organised, but we encourage anyone interested in being part of this adventure to contact Carl if you can help out.

Remember the Taupo Classic & 2wd Rally would be a good test event and is about a month before the Silver Fern, & the tarmac event Targa is right afterwards……...
