Kiwi Scott Dixon has won a tense and dramatic 92nd running of the Indianapolis 500 today by just under 2 seconds from second placed Vitor Meira. Marco Andretti was a further half second back in third.
The win is the first Indianapolis 500 victory by a New Zealand citizen.
Following the race, Dixon was naturally ecstatic with his first ever Indy 500 victory. Scott commented afterwards …
"We seemed to have a good car and just had to try and hold on to it. I was trying to save fuel."
One can understand that playing in the back of his mind following his second placing in the 2007 IndyCar title race after running out of fuel in the final race.
Following his victory, Dixon took the traditional drink of milk before pouring it over his head.
The biggest win of Dixon's career adds the icing to his 2003 IndyCar Championship cake.
Dixon elaborated …
"Everybody's cars were so fast towards the end. To come away and fight our way throughout the pack. Towards the end I was definitely worried but we came through with it. I was just waiting for something to go wrong. But everything just went as planned. We had a great month, the whole month."
And that he did.
Perhaps as one of New Zealand's motorsport stars currently leading the way for many of the Black Bullets stars of the future, Dixon may take out the next Halberg sports awards. With the Olympics yet to come this year and the emotion that always is given to any gold medals at the Olympics, it might make the Halberg's a difficult proposition.
However, those that may be making the Halberg awards decisions need to watch carefully the success and the impact of Dixon's victory today and over the upcoming weeks to appreciate his monumental achievement.
To cap off the victory, Dixon performed the now 'mandatory' kissing of the bricks on the track.
Truly a great day for New Zealand Motorsport!

You absolute legend Scott! You are only the 19th person in Indycar history to win the event from Pole, so what an absolutely brilliant performance. You get more fame and fortune from winning this race than from winning the whole series, so you will be forever famous in the USA as well as NZ!
